Why Sewer Backups Happen in Toronto
Most sewer backups in Toronto happen for one of two reasons: heavy rain overwhelms the sewer system, or a blockage stops wastewater from leaving the house. Knowing which one you are dealing with tells you how to stop it happening again.
Common causes
- Heavy rain and combined sewers. Many older Toronto neighbourhoods are served by combined sewers, which carry stormwater and sewage in the same pipe. In an intense storm the pipe can fill up and push wastewater back through the lowest drain in the house, usually the basement floor drain.
- A blocked sewer line. Grease, wipes and other debris build up in the pipe between your house and the city sewer until wastewater has nowhere to go.
- Tree roots. Roots get into older clay and cast iron pipes through small cracks and joints, then grow until they block the line.
- Damaged or collapsed pipes. Older sewer connections can crack, sag or collapse, which slows drainage and eventually causes backups.
Signs you have a sewer backup
- Water or sewage coming up through the basement floor drain
- Gurgling from drains or toilets when water runs elsewhere in the house
- Several fixtures draining slowly or backing up at the same time
- A strong sewage smell in the basement
If water is seeping in through the foundation walls or floor rather than rising from a drain, it is more likely groundwater, which needs a different fix.
How to Prevent Another Sewer Backup
Once the cleanup is done, the most effective protection is to stop wastewater flowing back into the house and to keep extra water out of the sewer.
- Backwater valve. Installed on the main sewer line, it closes when sewage starts to flow back toward your home. Installation needs a building permit in Toronto.
- Sump pump with battery backup. Moves water away from the foundation, and the battery keeps it running if a storm knocks out the power.
- Disconnected downspouts. Roof water that drains onto the lawn or garden instead of into the sewer eases the load during heavy rain.
- Careful drain habits. Keep grease, wipes and other debris out of sinks and toilets.
The City of Toronto’s Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy Program helps homeowners pay for this work. It currently covers up to $1,600 per backwater valve, $2,250 for a sump pump and $300 for a battery backup, to a maximum of $6,650 per property. Check the City’s eligibility rules before you book the work.
If water is also coming through the foundation, our own crews handle basement waterproofing as well as the cleanup.
